What is a Hyperbaric Chamber?

A hyperbaric chamber is a specially designed vessel built to withstand increased internal pressure while delivering pure oxygen therapy. Chambers may be cylindrical, spherical, or rectangular, depending on treatment needs.

Multiplace chambers are typically constructed using steel and include viewing windows and comfortable seating, while monoplace chambers are mainly acrylic and accommodate a single patient.

Our large rectangular chamber measures approximately 6m × 3m × 2m and serves as the primary treatment room with walk-in access, wheelchair entry, and emergency toilet facilities. A smaller cylindrical chamber
(3m length × 2m diameter) is used mainly for acute diving-related injuries.

How does HBOT work?

The air we normally breathe contains approximately 21% oxygen, 79% nitrogen, and small amounts of other gases. While the body can usually heal with normal oxygen levels, certain medical conditions require significantly higher oxygen delivery.

During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, pressure inside the chamber is increased to 2–3 times sea-level pressure, while patients breathe 100% pure oxygen. This allows a much greater quantity of oxygen to dissolve into the bloodstream and reach body tissues.

The additional oxygen supports healing by reducing swelling, controlling infection, stimulating new blood vessel growth, and improving tissue recovery. In dysbaric injuries, HBOT also helps reduce gas bubble size and minimizes the body’s injury response.

Side effects are uncommon and usually relate to pressure changes (ear or lung barotrauma) or increased oxygen exposure. Some patients may temporarily experience short-sightedness (myopia), which typically resolves within 3–4 months after therapy. Your doctor will discuss all risks before treatment. If you feel discomfort during therapy, inform the nurse immediately. During pressure reduction, ears may “pop” and the air may feel cooler.

Most treatments last approximately two hours and may be provided on an in-patient or out-patient basis. In acute situations, treatments may occur every eight to twelve hours depending on medical needs.

The number of treatments depends on clinical response and medical condition. Emergency cases may require only one or two sessions, while non-healing wounds may require 20–30 treatments.

Most patients feel normal during therapy. Some may experience ear fullness similar to airplane travel due to pressure changes. Patients are taught simple techniques to equalize ear pressure and remain comfortable.

Patients may read, talk, rest, sleep, or play games with staff or other patients. Short breaks may allow light refreshments during the session.
